How will new technologies change residential architecture in the near future? The miniaturization of processors, the wireless transmittal of data and refined sensor technologies are opening up new possibilities for Intelligent Houses. Yet many basic questions about these developments for the way we live have been left not addressed by research and showcase homes. For the exhibition on which this richly illustrated catalog is based the Vitra Design Museum and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena invited twelve emerging architectural firms to develop visionary answers to this question. The architects are based in the USA, Mexico, England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Korea, Japan and Australia. Their projects include room installations, models, photos and films. Perceptive essays add depth; among them, curator Susanne Jaschko puts the designs in the context of general trends in contemporary architecture, Beatriz Colomina comments on past visions of the future home, and Dana Hutt interviews renowned international architects on Future Living. Also includes data on demographic and technical developments which will shape future living environments and a mini encyclopedia of important technologies.
